Symbolic First Poppy presented to Governor-General

Gordon Moore, Dominion President of The Royal Canadian Legion, presented His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, and Patron of The Royal Canadian Legion, with the symbolic First Poppy today at Rideau Hall.

Her Excellency Sharon Johnston was then presented a Poppy by Larry Murray, Grand President of The Royal Canadian Legion, setting the stage for the Poppy Campaign to get under way officially two weeks later on Friday, October 25. The Legion’s Poppy Campaign always kicks off the last Friday of October when the Poppy blossoms on the lapels and collars of over half of Canada’s population.

“Remembrance Day is a day that we as a nation thank; honour and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. It is also a practical remembrance of the living – the disabled Veterans, RCMP members, widows, widowers, orphans and family members of those who served,” says Mr. Moore.

Since 1921, the Poppy has stood as the Symbol of Remembrance, a visual pledge to never forget those Canadians who have fallen in war and military support operations. The Poppy also stands internationally as a “symbol of collective reminiscence”, as other countries have also adopted its image to honour those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“By wearing the Poppy, Their Excellencies demonstrate our mutual understanding of Canada’s national debt of gratitude we owe all Veterans,’ adds Mr. Moore.
