Sadly, the local Poppy Campaign has lost another unsung hero. Comrade Charlie was Powell was a dedicated Poppy worker at Branch 50 for years. When he wasn't out tagging, he was preparing boxes for distribution.
OBITUARY - Comrade CHARLIE POWELL
Charlie passed away peacefully at home on Friday evening, May 16, 2014 after a lengthy illness.
He was born in London, England on April 8, 1924 to parents, Charles and Ivy (Warby). In January 1949 he married Evelyn (nee Diebel) and they celebrated 65 years together this past January. He was very proud of his children, Linda (Gary) Weinstein, Lois (Ronald) Green, Brenda (Michael) Wiles, Mark (Carol), and Joan (Peter) Trautrim. Also his grandchildren, Sarah (Kevin) Fitzgerald, Edward Rodgers, Anthony (Andrea) Rodgers, Cindy and Chad Green, Nathan (Cheryl) Wiles, Crystal (Sean) Woodham, Donald (Taysha) and Michael (Corene) Powell, Jennifer (Scott) Thompson, Nicole (Lyle), Erik (Kate), Hannah and Amanda Trautrim. Also 18 great-grandchildren. Survived also by his sister, Dorothy (Roy) Hackbart and 3 nieces. Predeceased by sisters, Ivy and Lily.
Charlie was a DDay veteran with the Fort Garry Horse Regt. as a Trooper in the tank corps. He was wounded August 13, 1944 returning home in December 1944. He was a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church and a 69 year member of R.C.L. Fred Gies Branch No. 50. He retired from Uniroyal after 33 years plus in 1979.
Our heartfelt thanks go to Drs. John Meenan, Elaine Bouttell and Stephen Keleher as well as CCAC team, Red Cross PSWs, E-shift PSWs, ParaMed nurses for all the loving care given to Charlie.
Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Legion Service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 136 Margaret Ave., Kitchener, on Friday, May 23, 2014 at 11 a.m., just prior to the Funeral service with Rev. Robin Korsch and Rev. Tom Prachar officiating. Reception will immediately follow the funeral in the Church Hall. A private family interment will take place in Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo.
There will also be a Memorial reception at Br 50 Saturady 2-6.
