There was a full house at the Polish Legion (Branch 412) Friday, March 29th, for the annual Poster Literary Awards/Major donations night.
Penny Bellhouse accepted $17,200 on behalf of St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation towards the purchase of four vital sign machines
Paul Amaral accepted two donations for the Grand River Hospital Foundation:
- $18,361 towards the purchase of forty-nine Patient Slings for GRH - K-W Campus
- $13,000 towards the purchase of a NuStep T5 recumbent cross trainer for GRH - Freeport Campus
Sue Hardy, Manager, Legacy Giving and Governance,St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation – Parkwood Institute was given a cheque for $19,050 towards the purchase of four tilting shower commodes and two Ceiling Lifts
Chairman Jim Meyer announced the following additional major donations from the 2018 Poppy Campaign:
$20,000.00 to Four Cadet Squadrons at $5,000.00 each for their invaluable help with the Poppy Campaign
$20,000.00 divided amongst the Provincial Command Poppy Fund, Bursary Programme, Homeless Veterans Programme, and Operation Service Dogs
$5,000.00 to District C Hospital Fund and Charitable Foundation
$9,008.87 for miscellany: Storage for Poppies and wreaths, Delta Elevator Maintenance to help our Veterans access their second-floor Clubroom, Annual Veterans Visit for 124 Meals, Canadian Adaptive Snow Sports, allowing injured Veterans to participate in a winter sports clinic
The total "major donations" from the 2018 totalled $121,619.87. All of these donations, as well as ongoing assistance for our Veterans all year round, are made possible by the generosity of the good people of Kitchener-Waterloo, and we Thank You.
Sixteen local schools participated in the Poster/Literary contest this year, with a total of 367 entries. There were 127 certificates given out for Branch level winners, twenty for entries that advanced to the Zone level, and several at the District level.
A special award was presented to Arfa Rana, a student of KCI, who place third in the Provincial Command Remembrance Video Contest.
Additionally, a plaque was presented to outgoing Chairman Jim Meyer by the Poppy Fund Executive, thanking him for his ten years as Chairman.
All in all, a very enjoyable, and rewarding evening.
